Tier 1 and Tier 2 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

The Capital District Regional Planning Commission (CDRPC) has launched a new interactive map displaying the locations of Tier 1 and Tier 2 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across the Capital Region. Using data from NYSERDA, the map provides a regional overview of existing energy storage facilities and highlights differences in system scale and storage capacity.

Tier 1 BESS are defined as systems with an aggregate energy capacity less than or equal to 600 kWh and are generally associated with smaller residential or commercial applications. Tier 2 BESS include systems with capacities greater than 600 kWh or facilities utilizing multiple energy storage technologies within a single enclosure.

Facilities are categorized by size to help illustrate their varying roles within the energy system. Smaller installations often support localized energy needs, while larger facilities can provide broader grid support and help integrate renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

This mapping resource is intended to support regional planning, energy analysis, and public awareness related to battery energy storage development throughout the Capital Region.
